Queer and Hip Hop culture
Kanye west just released a new album. Well its the sequel to his most recent venture. So I was on you guys favorite porn site twitter aka "X" , and this supposed Hip-hop influencer stated that no one was worried about the album anymore. I just sit back and think, how would someone who classifies themselves a s ship hop influencer or commentator, not care about one of the most innovative, original, talented, voices in hip hop. Without Kanye, there wouldn't be a lot of artists today. So doing me, I commented and stated some real life things like, "Oh I bet you care now." Of course he lies for clout and to make himself seem right but why lie? For the queer community, if you are an artist, music for us is a true art form. From my personal experience, music is an escape for us. We use music to make sense of what we are going through. And I just don't want to put this on only queer people. I think all people who enjoy a tune or two, use it to escape their reality. However, when it come down to the queer community and hip hop culture, there is this thin boundary that people don't want to cross. Hip hop artists fear the term gay or queer. Its so sad to see so many talented artists turned around due to the industry not accepting sexuality or simply who we are. This is a kid in the face for all of us. Especially when there is proven evidence that we are the largest investors in that medium of art. Even though the industry fears the term gay or queer, We have seen artists like Lil Nas X and Santana, make a stand on culture. I personally just don't like the over dramatization and the false images used to project that all gay and queer artists are literally what they exploit. And there is nothing wrong with feminine energy, but there should be a deep dive in as to why femininity is projected instead of masculinity. Is it because femininity sales more? Doe the masculine gay get overshadowed, by the seal exploitation of artists? I personally feel like your queer community needs a little more of diversity when it comes to the artists that are represented as queer artists. As I previously stated in my article, There aren't true examples of queer people who are diverse and going against the odds of heterosexual normative. I also think that its safe to play the feminine role. I also think society has categorized femininity with being the only characterization of what gay people or queer individual's can bring to the table. I just want to let the world know that, They don't dress up in skirt and wigs on their day off. They piss standing up and they have to select male on their applications. These are men who are living their queer lives as we perceive them to be. But when it comes to hip hop, we also see that they are not accepted when it comes to features and being more prevalent in the topics of hip hop. For example, when Lil Was X first came to existence, he was portraying a straight heterosexual male. Once he came out, his entire persona changed. This now becomes controversial. This shaped his career? This was a rare occasion where as a queer community, we should have dissected the transition and how it affected the people he previously worked with. Such as young thug, who is a blaitan homophobic man. For all my queer and Black American readers, How do you feel about queer people in hip hop? Are we supported as we should be? Are there things that we could do, to be better? Is the industry taking advantage of our intellect and art?
